“Welcome” Whole Cloth Quilt

4-DSCN5812-001This is a result of a year of practicing machine quilting. A challenge Kitty and I started last year. I learned a lot this past year and really improved my quilting skills. This will not be my last whole cloth quilt.

All year I had a different idea in my head and then when it came to finally doing this, I changed my mind.

I wish I could say I drew out my design but I didn’t. I started with the letters, printed them out and marked my quilt giving me plenty of room around the word to add more elements.

I also wish I had used a lighter or different color thread and double batting so the quilting would show more. Or maybe a heavier weight thread. I used Aurifil 50 wt which is perfect for traveling and not having your stitching scream at you.

This is what it looks like on the wall.

I practiced a form of feathers, stitching straight lines, pebbles and a squiggle.5-DSCN5816-001 6-DSCN5815-001 3-DSCN5811-001

My goal for this year is to expand my design choices, on my new long arm. While pantographs and rulers are handy tools, my favorite type of quilting is free motion.

How are you broadening your quilting skills?

Beautifully done!! Whole cloths are a great way to practice new techniques and perfect more well used techniques! I really like the subtlety of it. That fabric is just gorgeous!

    • Jackie

Thank you Judy. I love the fabric but the stitching does seem to get lost in the rich color.
