Felted Dryer Balls

This post is a detour from the typical quilting/sewing topics but to those of us that like fiber in the form of fabric, many of us also like fiber in skeins.

I came across this idea through Lifehaker. Since I have a lot of allergies and the typical fabric softeners and dryer sheets are not an option for me, I wanted to give this a try.

You start with a skein of 100% wool yarn.Felted Wool Dryer Balls

Wrap the yarn into a tennis size balls, I was able to get 3 balls from one skein.

Tie into an old stocking and throw in your washer and dryer to “felt” them

Here is a before and after:

Close up you can see what happens to the yarns.

Throw them in your dryer with your clothes. I have found they work fairly well. I do find that they don’t prevent static cling with a dryer full of towels. Other than that, I am pleased.

Enjoy the Journey, Jackie

This is very interesting. I just bought dryer balls and think they’re ok. Since I’m sensitive to, have itchy reaction to wool,I wonder how that would work for me. It’s good to know how to felt the wool balls though. I felt wool fabric, but this is different. Thanks for sharing.

I am allergic to wool as well. Can’t even be in clothing such as a jacket where the wool is not near my skin and I have not had a problem with the felted balls. I also didn’t have a problem with the yarn, but winding them went quickly. I figured if I had a problem with them I had a friend I could give them to. Want me to send you a couple to try?
