July Quilt-It Challenge

This is part of the Quilt It! Challenge that Kitty Pearl over at Road Home Quilting started at the beginning of the year. I have noticed something about myself as I work through these blocks each quarter.

  • My mind freezes up when I try to think of ideas
  • I start out with comfortable and familiar
  • Shortly after I start I regret my decision
  • I am never quite happy with the first block
  • I want to have a “do over”
  • This is harder than I thought it would be

This quarter’s block was no different. I did start with a flying geese design in my head and while it is not monumental, I wanted the flow of movement towards the center.

Once in the center however, I reverted back to the known. After that, I just continued in that mindset. Ugh! I have to remind myself these are practice blocks. And by definition, even doing the same thing improves my skill level.

So here is my block for July. I don’t like and I don’t even want to think about the block for August.

I used thread to match the fabrics so the stitching doesn’t stand out very well.

Do you ever get discouraged when your creativity doesn’t keep up with your desire?

Sigh. there are two more months and this is practice.

Enjoy the Journey, Jackie

This looks lovely. Don’t get discouraged, it’s way more than most of us are doing in the way of practicing FMQ. You are inspiring everyone!

    • Jackie

Thanks Sandi, I know I tend to set my expectations high.

I think it is lovely, but I know exactly what you’re talking about. I wrote about it not to long ago with one of my favorite quotes ever for when I discouraged. Check it out – maybe it will help! http://theboredzombie.com/2013/05/some-encouragement-and-inspiration.html

This turned out wonderful! Your mind may have been frozen in the beginning, but it certainly thawed and jumped into creative gear.

    • Jackie

Thank you Daphne, my mind is already churning ideas for the August block.

I know what you mean about freezing, but I love this block. It looks very rich and your quilting compliments the design perfectly!

    • Jackie

      Thanks Jenny,

I love what I see others do, and my mind becomes mush when it’s time to do my own.

That turned out great! I love it!

  • Paula Hughes

Impressed as always. I think it looks great. I like the matching thread.

    Hello Jackie,

It’s a lovely block – quilting, colours, everything! It’s all practice. Think of where you were at about, say, two years ago. You are probably way ahead of what you were doing then.

    Love,
