Selvage Edges – What Not to Do

This bag while fun to make was not without a few challenges.

The tutorial can be found over here or here.

There is the typical right side / wrong side instead of right side / right side mistake.

At which point your BFF of sewing tools is put to use.
The trusty seam ripper.

Unique to this project is not overlapping your strips enough to cover the raw edge of the strip below. Whoops.

This was noticed in a couple of spots after all the strips had been sewn.

I had two options, one go back to my seam ripper and remove all the seams sewn afterwards and redo.

Or create a new “design element” to correct the error.

As you can see, I choose the latter and covered the open seam with zig-zag stitches.

Lesson to learn, if you work with selvage edges be sure to overlap enough to cover your raw edges.

What new things have you learned recently?

The tutorial for this can be found on my tutorial page here.

Enjoy the journey, Jackie

Very cute bag Jackie! I just love selvages but you’re right, they can be tricky to sew. Thanks for sharing.
