Veteran Quilt Sew-In

Veteran Lap Quilt Tops

I am organizing a sew-in at my house on Saturday to make lap quilts for Veterans in hospice care. A young man in our church is a chaplain with a local hospital and he is the catalyst behind this project. My goal is to make 10 quilts over the next few months with the help of others towards his goal of 50 quilts.

Many of the willing volunteers have little or no experience with sewing so I have already pieced some quilts so some can get started on the quilting as well as provide a visual of what the others will be piecing.

To make the tops go together quickly and easily I have cut 2 1/2 inch strips and 8 1/2 inch blocks. That will give a variety of piecing options.

I even have a couple of “cheater” tops to make the process even quicker.

I expect a great time of fun, fellowship and food as we spend the day together and some quilts well on their way to being done!

Enjoy the journey, Jackie

  • What a great project! And doing all that pre-prep is a great idea, too. Will make it much easier to accomplish a lot with many hands. And doing it on Memorial Day weekend–stroke of genius. 🙂 Looking forward to seeing pictures. Don’t forget to take pics of the process and everyone working!

  • Looks like you all had a great weekend! I also love how you planned it all out- down to plenty of chocolate to keep those ladies motivated! The vets that receive those quilts are very fortunate you all gave your time to sew for them…. 🙂 Glad we have people like to you to coordinate these sew-ins!
