Quilting started for me when I was pregnant with my first child over 30 years ago. I wish I could say I have been quilting the entire time over the past 30 years, but the stresses and busyness of life took over and other than special quilts from time to time I did little sewing.
I wanted to make something special for the baby I was expecting when I found a quilt kit. I knew how to sew as I had been making my clothes for over a decade but quilting had different rules. I do remember sewing a ⅝ inch seam, thinking the directions in the kit were incorrect. Once I started piecing and things didn’t come together as they were supposed to, I decided I would pay attention to the directions. Silly me. Applique was also new to me and when I look closely at my work, I can tell I really didn’t know what I was doing.
Finished it is 26×30. It may have a lot of flaws, but I am proud of it. Everyone needs to start somewhere.
The quilt was a promise at a time when I was told I would never be able to have children. While I was too busy for many things in the coming years, including quilting, I was able to raise and watch my children grow.
Now that they are grown with children of their own, and I am in a new season of life, one that includes quilting.
When did you start quilting?
Enjoy the Journey! Jackie
